Spiritual Formation

WHAT IS IT?

Spiritual Formation is the process through which those who love and trust Jesus effectively take on His character.  “As the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like Him and reflect His glory even more.” 2Cor3:18b. God’s plan for us is not that we would stay infants, but that we would grow up, becoming mature and partnering with Him, this is His desire.  He wants to form His image in us.  Spiritual Formation can be taught and learned through spiritual disciplines.

HOW DO I GROW?

Spiritual disciplines give substance to our Christian life in our daily living.  The disciplines are things like solitude, silence, and meditation on scripture, worship, prayer, service, fasting, generous giving, spiritual direction and confession. The Holy Spirit works within us through these disciplines, so that we can get to know and love Jesus.  “As we know Jesus better, His divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life.  He has called us to receive His own glory and goodness!” 2Peter 1:3.  We are becoming disciples.

Another way is involvement in a spiritual formation small group. This involvement equips and motivates us to grow in these disciplines, makes us accountable and connects us to the Body of Christ.  We are intended to support and encourage one another. “Now all of you together are Christ’s Body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of It.” 1Cor12:27

Spiritual Formation Ministry

PURPOSE

Since the early 1990’s, the Spiritual Formation ministry of Fremont has existed for the purpose of providing the congregation with experiences, educational opportunities, and the tools/disciplines necessary for the Holy Spirit to form God’s people into the image of Christ.

INVOLVEMENT

The Spiritual Formation Leadership Team is made up of individuals who are committed in their own lives to make space for the Spiritual disciplines so that Christ might shape them into his image in increasing measure.  One of the primary means we do this is through the discipline and accountability of Spiritual direction.

Each member of the Spiritual Formation team focuses their attention and service on both a “personal call” and a “common call.”  Areas of personal call have included leading small groups which emphasize Spiritual Formation, developing art forms that give expression to the life of the Spirit, mentoring others one on one in their spiritual growth, etc.  Areas of common call that the team has worked on are retreats and classes.

CONTACTS

For more information about the Spiritual Formation team and how you can be involved, contact Arlene Lockett at 916-359-0835 or Jeff Hoffmeyer at 916-452-7132 ext 223
