SCRIPTURE: James 1
KEY POINTS TO PONDER: 1) Trials are inevitable (v. 2), but they are a means by which God develops precious characteristics within us. We must “let” perseverance finish its work. We can ask God for wisdom amidst our trials (v. 5). 2) When we are tempted we cannot blame God (vv. 13-14). It is actually the sinful desires in our hearts that cause us to fall into temptation. 3) We are not only to be hearers of the Word, but doers as well (v. 22).
CHALLENGING TERMS: First fruits: This is an Old Testament farming term referring to the first and best crops being given to God as an offering. For believers, the new life we enjoy in Christ is the first fruits or a foretaste of all that is to come.
QUESTIONS: What current trial are you struggling to let godly characteristics be formed within you? What actions in your life reflect that you are not just a hearer of the word but also a doer?
PRAYER: Father, thank you, even when I can’t see it that you are refining me through difficult circumstances. Help me to trust this.
Consider asking God to help you be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry (v. 19).
