Scripture: Luke 1

Key Points to Ponder: Luke has carefully researched and investigated the details of Jesus’ life. Luke functions as a historian, while also being a doctor. He is writing so that we may know with certainty about Jesus’ identity. Luke’s focus on the poor and outcast is seen from the beginning. He tells of how both Zechariah and Elizabeth, as well as Mary, played instrumental roles in God’s plan being fulfilled. The theme of God exalting the humble is evident in both Mary’s song, as well as Zechariah’s words. Notice the contrast between Zechariah’s and Mary’s responses to the angel.

Challenging Terms: In both Mary’s song, as well as Zechariah’s prophecy there are many terms that have Old Testament significance. Jesus is the fulfillment of all that has been promised.

Reflection: Would you characterize your response to God’s Word as more reflective of Zechariah (unbelief) or Mary (submissiveness)?

Prayer: Father, thank you, that humble circumstances do not disqualify me, or others from being used by you. Help me to have a soft heart that I may receive your word with submissiveness and not unbelief.
