Scripture: John 18

Key points to ponder: Here Jesus faces a small army, but he is mightier than a detachment of troops. However, Jesus willingly goes with the arresting army. This shows how powerful Jesus is, while still allowing himself to suffer for our sakes, despite our failures, such as Peters in this passage.

Challenging terms: Since at the time of these events, the Jews were ruled over by the Romans, the Jews had to appeal to the Roman government for different forms of justice and regulation. Pilate, the Roman governor, found Jesus innocent and didn’t get why the Jews wanted to kill him.

Questions: Does this verse help you understand why Jesus came into the world? What truth is Jesus bearing witness to as he puts on flesh and gives his life as a ransom for the world? Read John 14:6

Prayer: Father, thank you for sending your son to die willingly for us even amidst our own failures.

Consider praying that God would help you have the same sacrificial love that Jesus has demonstrated to us.
