Scripture: John 17
Key points to ponder: Here we see prayer is repeatedly directed to God the Father, and there is concern for the work of the kingdom of God in Jesus’ prayer. As disciples, we can model our prayers after this “High Priestly Prayer” (as it’s called). Jesus in this prayer also expresses his deep love for us, and prays that we would truly love each other and be made new and healed (vs. 15), and that we would be protected in suffering (vs. 15).
Challenging terms: Sanctify (vs. 17) is a word which essentially means to be set apart or holy. Consecrate (vs. 19) is a word which means to be set apart for a special purpose. In this case when Jesus is consecrated, he is setting himself apart for the special purpose of dying to save people from their sins.
Questions: How might we seek to be unified together, as Jesus is unified with the Father (vs. 11, 26)? Would people you know be drawn to Christianity if Christians stood upon the truth of God’s Word and were united together and had genuine love for one another?
Prayer: Father, thank you for loving us even as you love your son Jesus!
Consider praying that God would train you to love others with the same true unconditional love which he has given you.
