Scripture: John 21
Key points to ponder: One might assume that the book of John would end in the last chapter, but this final chapter carries an important message to those following Jesus today. First, we need to keep fishing (vs. 3) meaning that we are called to keep sharing the message of life which we have believed. Second, we need to rely on Jesus as we share this message (vs. 6). Note that the disciples didn’t catch any fish till Jesus came to help. And third, God calls us to keep following him even as we still live in our own sin and failure, just as Jesus called Peter to leadership even after he had failed miserably (ch. 18:25-27). His love and power is far greater than our failures.
Challenging terms: Peter knew that the person talking to them was Jesus because in another account of the gospel (Luke 5:1-11) it explains that this same exact situation happened when Peter was first following Jesus.
Questions: If you believe what you’ve read in the rest of the book, what might it look like for you to “keep fishing”? Are you relying on Jesus for his help to share what you have believed?
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for giving us the gift of getting to share this beautiful message of life with those who need to hear it.
Consider praying that you would experience the life which Jesus intended for you, a life where you can live in his salvation and share it with those who haven’t heard it yet.
