SCRIPTURE: 1 John 2
KEY POINTS TO PONDER: 1) Jesus died for all of our sins, and we can trust he will forgive us and declare us righteous. (v. 2). 2) Whether we are living in light or darkness is revealed through our love, or lack of love, towards our brothers and sisters (vv. 9-11). 3) We are not to love the world system (v. 15).
CHALLENGING TERMS: The poetic refrain in verses 12-14 is John addressing those at different parts of their spiritual faith (those who are new in believing, those who are growing in faith, and those who are spiritual mentors). When John says not to love the world, he isn’t referring to people, but rather not to be pulled into the various worldly lusts that are offered. The antichrists in verse 18 refer to those who will come to lead away those who believe false teaching.
QUESTIONS: Which aspect of the “world” are you currently struggling with loving too much? How is it detracting from your relationship with God?
PRAYER: Thank you Jesus that we have such forgiveness in you, and that you enable us to walk in the light of your love and forgiveness.
Consider praying that God would help you live in love and light as you rely on him for your righteousness and forgiveness.
