SCRIPTURE: Acts 2
KEY POINTS TO PONDER: The first evangelism that happens after Jesus’ ascension begins to paint a beautiful image of God’s global plan for salvation. In verses 2-11, a kingdom which the disciples thought would be purely made of Jewish Israelites is revealed to be a kingdom of beautiful diversity, “a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages” (Revelation 7:9). When the Holy Spirit descends on the disciples, his first work is to proclaim the gospel to many peoples in their own language. As Christians we can rely on this same power to translate God’s love and truth to others in a way that will make sense to them. Not everyone will listen to the same representation of the gospel, and not everyone will experience God’s love in the same way. Just as the early disciples did we too can trust in God’s power to help us communicate Christ to all those who are in our lives.
CHALLENGING TERMS: Pentecost (v. 1) was the second of the annual harvest festivals, which came 50 days after the Passover celebration, and Jews from all over the surrounding regions and countries would have come to celebrate it. This is why there were so many people of different languages and cultures in the area when the Holy Spirit came on the disciples.
REFLECTION: Who do you have the desire to share your faith with? Consider asking that the Holy Spirit would aid you in communicating this to them?
PRAYER: Father, thank you that you give us the power to proclaim your name to others!
Pray that you would be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to share about Jesus with others in wisdom and boldness.
