SCRIPTURE: Acts 3

KEY POINTS TO PONDER: After the healing of the man at the gate, Peter gives his second representation of the gospel to the surrounding people. His first and second speeches both carry similar themes of repentance, resurrection, and the gospel story in all the Bible. As people in sin, we need to repent and recognize our sin and how we’ve rebelled against God. We need to look to the resurrection of Jesus as salvation from that sin, and recognize that he is the one who can save us. Peter also gives evidence of these things in both his speeches by referencing Biblical history (David, Abraham, Moses, Samuel, etc.) which the Jews would have been knowledgeable on. A simple way to sum up Peter’s speech could sound something like this: we are sinful, the Bible shows that Jesus saved us from that, and we need to repent to accept his salvation.

CHALLENGING TERMS: Solomon’s portico was a partially covered walkway along the eastern wall of the temple area, so Peter’s speech would have been easy to hear for anyone in the area. The beautiful gate was an entrance to

the temple close to Solomon’s portico. The early Church used Solomon’s portico as one of their first gathering areas.

REFLECTION: Which of these themes (repentance, the resurrection, the credibility of the Bible) do you find hardest to understand or express to others? Pick one to focus on and think about it as you keep reading Acts. See how the disciples expressed that idea to others throughout the book.

PRAYER: Father, thank you for empowering us to understand the gospel in such simple terms and relay that to others!

Pray for God to give you a heart that is open to understand the gospel at an even deeper level, and to express these aspects of the gospel to those in your life.
