SCRIPTURE: Acts 4

KEY POINTS TO PONDER: At the end of this chapter (vv. 32-27), as in the end of chapter 2, we see that the community of believers share a beautifully unique lifestyle of sharing, generosity, and unity. When it says, “they had everything in common” (v. 32), it means that they weren’t separated by class or language or reputation or wealth, but that all were united in caring for one another and glorifying God together. They were committed to God, and that bred a deep intimacy and commitment as a community. This community goes beyond being a caring and united one. It was one that was focused on a mission together. Think about the prayer the disciples prayed in the previous verses. They first praised God for his power and plans (v. 24), then they recognized the challenges they were facing (vv. 25-28), and, finally, they asked God for boldness to preach God’s word while he was bringing healing and restoration in Jesus (vv. 29-30). As Christians, we need to be aware that we gather and work together not for ourselves but to be a part of furthering the kingdom of God and bringing healing and restoration. Coming together as Christians will breed a deep intimacy and unity seated in Christ It will guide our feet in paths of peace and it will focus our eyes on the mission we are called to live out with Jesus.

CHALLENGING TERMS: The Sadducees were a group of religious leaders.

REFLECTION: What drives you to be a part of Christian community? How can you seek to build up the kingdom in a similar way that you see happening in these verses within your own life?

PRAYER: Father, thank you that when we seek after you that you build us up into a community that is strengthened, compassionate, and driven to glorify you!

Pray that God would strengthen both you and your Christian communities to reflect the community described in Acts 4, and that He would reveal how to do this.
