SCRIPTURE: Acts 6

KEY POINTS TO PONDER: Here we see the beginning of a practice that is still prevalent in the church today; the use

of different giftings in the church. This is where we begin to see the office of deacons established. They are appointed to meet the physical needs of the church body. We see as the church grows that different people are called and ordained to serve in different areas and with different gifts from God. One thing to keep in mind is that giftings never get in the way of our primary calling as Christians. You see, Stephen (as seen in verse 8) didn’t stop proclaiming Jesus just because he was appointed to help “serve tables.” He continued to live out his faith boldly and share Christ with others. As Christians, we will find God calling us to different tasks and different kinds of work, but we can still pray for the boldness to share Jesus with others and be a light to those in darkness.

CHALLENGING TERMS: When false charges were brought against Stephen, when he said “Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place” it was probably a twisting of words. Stephen was quoting Jesus, when in the gospels Jesus said that he would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. What Jesus was actually referring to was his death and resurrection.

REFLECTION: What sort of duties do you help with in the church, or what duties do you think you could help with?

PRAYER: Father, thank you that you have given us each distinct giftings and tasks, and yet we are all called to the same amazing mission of sharing about you!

Pray for clarity for the various ways God has called you to serve in this season, while
